Brewers' Josh Hader ties record with 40th consecutive scoreless appearance

An early darkhorse for National League MVP, Milwaukee Brewers closer Josh Hader continued to make his case for the honor, tying a major league record on Sunday.

In a 6-4 extra-inning loss to the San Diego Padres, Hader posted his 40th consecutive scoreless appearance, matching Houston Astros' reliever Ryan Pressly for the longest such streak in MLB history.

The 28-year-old hasn't allowed a run since July 28 of last season.

This season, Hader is a perfect 18-for-18 in save appearances. Opposing teams have gone 4-for-55, batting .073/.164/.091 against the three-time all-star.

On May 13, Hader broke the MLB record for consecutive saves to start a season, passing Baltimore Orioles Lee Smith (1994) and Pittsburgh Pirates Jose Mesa (2005).

Last season, Hader became the fastest pitcher to reach 400 strikeouts, accomplishing the feat in 234.2 innings.

Hader's historic start has had a significant impact on the Brewers' success this season. Despite losing three straight, the Brewers remain a game ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals for first place in the National League Central with a 33-23 record.

Tuesday will be Hader's first opportunity to break the record when the Brewers begin a three-game series at home against the Philadelphia Phillies.
