Another hurler reportedly is off the market.
The Boston Red Sox have been linked to seemingly every hurler that has been available in some way this offseason but haven't been able to land multiple targets.
The latest rumored Red Sox target to sign elsewhere is former Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants hurler Jakob Junis as the Milwaukee Brewers swooped in and got a deal done, according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel.
"Right-hander Jakob Junis has a deal with the Brewers pending physical, per source," McDaniel said. "He's being signed as a starting pitcher after having served as both starter and reliever for the Giants over the last two seasons."
Junis isn't the biggest name on the market, but he could've been some help for Boston. He was mentioned as a fit on numerous occasions and it's not hard to see why.
He has multiple connections to the Red Sox organization and also could've provided more depth for the club. Junis has seen time as a starter and reliever but he's expected to enter Spring Training as a starting pitcher for the 2024 campaign.
Last season he had a 3.87 ERA in 40 total appearances -- including four starts -- with the Giants and had a 96-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 86 innings pitched. The 31-year-old has a career 4.64 ERA in seven seasons.
There still are some very solid options out there for the Red Sox but they are going to need to act fast as free agency starts to pick up. It's unclear exactly what Boston wants, but if it wants to land a starter it needs to make a move fast.
