Injuries to the Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation have been an issue in 2023.  Currently on the injured list are Brandon Woodruff, Aaron Ashby, and Wade Miley.  This has left the team thin at the position and has raised legitimate thoughts about a midseason trade to bolster their pitching staff.

On Monday evening news regarding another Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher surfaced.  This time left-handed thrower Eric Lauer has landed on the injured list with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.  He has been struggling this year, was briefly moved into the bullpen, and now has been diagnosed with right shoulder impingement.

Struggling Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Eric Lauer heads to 15-day IL with shoulder impingement.

This season Eric Lauer has made eight starts and nine overall appearances.  His season ERA sits at 5.48 and he has surrendered 13 home runs.  To make matters worse he currently has a dreadful 1.523 WHIP, 9.5 H:9, 4.2 BB:9, and his fastball velocity is lower when compared to seasons prior.

When asked about his struggles this year and how this injury might have impacted his play, Eric Lauer had this to say: “My glove shoulder doesn’t feel right.  It doesn’t feel like I can get out there and rip it back through.  It just gets out there and kinda has this dead feeling to it.”  He also discussed how this has subsequently gone on to impact his mechanics on the mound.

For the Brewers, this move is retroactive to May 21.  It also sets the Brewers up to throw Corbin Burnes, Colin Rea, and Adrian Houser during the Houston Astros series.  The starter for Thursday’s game against the San Francisco Giants is to be determined.
