Brewers fans in Wisconsin will have an opportunity to get their first live looks at the Crew’s top prospect this weekend in Appleton. Jackson Chourio, 18, who was called up to High-A on Sunday, is now playing just an hour-and-a-half away from American Family Field. Starting Thursday, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will be hosting the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a four-game series. Chourio is slated to be playing in all four games while in Appleton.
What’s the hype around Chourio?
Chourio signed with the Brewers out of Venezuela during the 2020-21 international signing period. The quick righty started the season at Low-A Carolina ranked as the Brewers' 17th-best prospect. Once in Carolina, Chourio started catching the attention of the Brewers front-office executives while hitting .324 with 12 home runs. At 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, Chourio does not look the part of an imposing power threat, but his play has shown otherwise. Chourio raked in a .973 OPS during his 62 games in Carolina. Combine his power with speed and a great outfield glove, and it was only a matter of time before Chourio’s stock would rise.
At 18 years old, Chourio was the youngest player selected to this year’s All-Star Futures Game, where he joined other Brewers prospects Joey Wiemer and Antoine Kelly. Shortly after that selection, the Brewers announced they would be promoting him to High-A Wisconsin. Along with the promotion, Chourio has shot to the No. 1 spot on MLB pipeline’s Brewers prospect list. Chourio also ranks at No. 36 in the MLB’s top 100 prospects. This makes Chourio the youngest player on that list.
Chourio with the Timber Rattlers
Chourio has played in three games so far with the Timber Rattlers posting a .357 batting average with an RBI and stolen base. Tallying hits in two of his first three at bats at High-A, Chourio did not let the promotion slow him down.
With the athletic skill set Chourio possesses, he has already drawn hefty comparisons. Many feel that Chourio is the type of prospect the Brewers have not seen in quite some time. MLB Pipeline currently has his MLB ETA set to 2025. Since he's only 18, Chourio still has a long road to go before fans see him in Milwaukee, but the early success is cause for excitement. Chourio went 1-for-5 in Thursday night’s home debut with a single and a strikeout.
