The Sporting News National League Manager of the Year Award winner has been named.

Buck Showalter, who joined the New York Mets last winter and led them to a 101-61 record, has been named the Sporting News NL Manager of the Year.

This is not the official Manager of the Year Award.

That will be decided during the offseason by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

But for now, Showalter has received yet another tremendous honor and joins Bobby Cox and Jim Leyland as the third manager to have won a Sporting News Manager of the Year Award at least four times.

Buck Earns Special Honor

Showalter is without a doubt one of the most successful managers in baseball history.

But the way he has transformed the Mets has been nothing short of remarkable.

New York had missed the postseason five straight years and had even endured an epic second-half collapse in 2021, becoming the first team in baseball history to have led the division as late as August and finished below the .500 mark.

But 2022 was different.

The Mets had reloaded with Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, Starling Marte, and Mark Canha.

They also had a new manager along for the ride: one of the most successful and well-respected managers in all of baseball.

And Showalter guided the Mets to their first 100+ win season since 1988.

With the award, he joins two Hall-of-Famers in Jim Leyland and Bobby Cox as a four-time winner.

Showalter may have been just what the Mets needed in order to return to form.
