The Padres made a significant move on Sunday as they called up catcher Brett Sullivan on Sunday. The Friars' other catcher Luis Campusano landed in the 10-day IL due to a left thumb sprain.
That leaves Sullivan and Austin Nola as the two catchers; however, the team announced that Sullivan will get the start tonight in their second game of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.
This will be the 29-year-olds first major league starts after spending the last seven seasons in the minor leagues. Brett has been a part of two other organizations besides the Padres, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Sullivan signed with the Rays as a second baseman in 2015; he spent seven seasons with the Tampa Bay organization before signing with the Brewers in late 2021. In early April 2022, the Padres traded for Brett, and he's been with the Padres triple-A affiliate since.
In his time in the minors, he's a career .273 hitter with a .751 OPS, 68 home runs, and 424 RBIs In 715 games and 2705 ABs.
We're happy to see Sullivan get his first crack at the majors, and we wish him the best tonight.
