On Monday, we learned that outfielder Andrew Benintendi is a candidate to bat leadoff for the Chicago White Sox.

On Tuesday, we learned that Benintendi dealt with hand discomfort most of the 2023 season. Perhaps that's partially to explain for his generally unimpressive first year on the South Side.

From Vinnie Duber of ALLCHGO on social media:

Benintendi was hindered by a hand injury in 2023. He focused on getting stronger this winter.

“Added a little bit of weight. I think this was one of my best offseasons, as far as working out and getting stronger. We’ll see how it translates, hopefully it does. Time will tell.”

Benintendi dealt with hamate bone issues in 2022 so perhaps there was some carryover there.

After signing a five-year, $85 million deal last offseason, Benintendi hit just .262 in 2023. He posted only a .326 on-base percentage, hitting only five homers and bringing in 45.

He is an eight-year veteran who has played for the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees and White Sox. He helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2018 and made the All-Star team in 2022. He's also won an American League Gold Glove Award.

The White Sox project to be one of the worst teams in the American League this season, but if they are going to surprise people, they'll need a bounceback season from Benintendi.

He'll pair with Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert to form the top trio in the Sox order, with Yoan Moncada likely coming next.
