Cleveland baseball team, roller derby group reach lawsuit resolution; will both be named 'Guardians'

MLB's local nine inside the Rock 'n' Roll Capital of the World is continuing the process of transitioning to the Cleveland Guardians.

Per Zack Meisel of The Athletic, the Cleveland baseball organization and the Cleveland Guardians roller derby team have come to an agreement and will both use the moniker.

The MLB organization announced in July that they were rebranding and would become the Cleveland Guardians at some point before the 2022 MLB season as the franchise distances itself from "the Indians" -- a name and logo deemed by many to be racist and offensive. The team began removing the scripted "Indians" logo from its scoreboard earlier this month as part of the process.

The area roller derby team has been known as the Cleveland Guardians since 2013 and sued the MLB franchise over the rebrand and name, but Cleveland later released a statement shared by outlets such as the AP (h/t ESPN) that suggests the franchise is moving forward with its plans.
