According to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, Chicago Cubs’ pitcher Adbert Alzolay will begin a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League.

Alzolay hasn’t pitched this year due to a right shoulder strain. In 29 appearances last season, the young right-hander posted a 4.58 ERA with 128 strikeouts, 34 walks, and a 1.162 WHIP across 125.2 innings.

Prior to Monday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cubs’ pitching coach Tommy Hottovy discussed the possibility of Alzolay making an appearance with the MLB club before the end of the season.

“Adbert getting here and being able to pitch and trust his stuff and kind of get back to what he did last year, I think is very important,” Hottovy said.

He further elaborated on the importance of a normal offseason and Alzolay being able to talk and work with the staff.

“So, you feel a lot more confident that if he finishes the year strong and healthy, that we can take that into the offseason, work on the things we need to work on and be ready for Spring Training.”

The Chicago Cubs will likely have a couple of openings in the starting rotation next year. Alzolay joining the group could be a major shot in the arm for the 2023 club. And an appearance from the righty before the end of this season could be a major confidence booster heading into the offseason.
