Cubs All-Star catcher Willson Contreras would 'consider returning' to Chicago in offseason if traded

Chicago Cubs All-Star catcher Willson Contreras is speculated by many to be on the move ahead of the MLB trade deadline on August 2.

Though, if Contreras finds himself playing in another uniform on August 3, his career as a Cub may not be over.

A guest Wednesday on ESPN 1000's Waddle and Silvy Show, Contreras said he's not focused on a potential trade, but if it happens, he would consider returning to the Cubs in the offseason.

This season with the Cubs, Contreras is batting .266/.382/.480 with 13 home runs and 35 RBI in 74 games. Contreras earned his third All-Star nod over the weekend. On July 13, he'll be the starting backstop for the NL in this year's midsummer classic.

Contreras, on the books for $9.6 million this season, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.

Signed as an amateur free agent in 2009 by the Cubs, Contreras has called Wrigley Field home for his entire seven-year MLB career.

Over seven seasons with the Cubs, Contreras has batted .260/.353/.461 with 108 home runs and 345 RBI.

The 30-year-old backstop, having a career year, could be an attractive asset on the trade market, especially with the Cubs seemingly out of contention.

Entering play on Wednesday, the Cubs sat at 34-53, 14 games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central and 12.5 games back of the final wildcard spot in the NL.
