With the Chicago Cubs' offseason having plenty of excitement surrounding the number of avenues the team can explore, some rumors are coming to light. According to a report via the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs and LHP Drew Smyly's camp are set to have discussions on a new contract in the near future.
Smyly found himself back with the Cubs at the beginning of 2022 after spending time with the team while he rehabbed from Tommy John Surgery years ago. After a World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 2021, Smyly's return to Chicago exceeded the expectations of most. The veteran left-hander outplayed his one-year, $5.25 million deal he signed back in March.
In 22 starts for the Cubs, Smyly pitched to a 3.47 ERA in 106.1 innings of work. Although his strikeout numbers weren't overwhelming (91), he was incredibly effective for the Cubs. In fact, Smyly was incredible during the month of August. The 33-year-old lefty pitched to a 0.90 ERA in five starts with a 2-1 record, 25 strikeouts, and just six walks.
Smyly is on record about his desires to return to the Cubs in 2023. If the reports are true, then there is a very good chance we see Smyly again as a No. 4 or No. 5 starter next season. If the Cubs add another free agent to a group of Justin Steele, Marcus Stroman, Kyle Hendricks, and Smyly, there is a great chance for the team to have a solid rotation. Oh, and don't forget about Hayden Wesneski too.
There are a ton of question marks surrounding the Cubs' offseason. However, it appears we're starting to get an understanding of the direction Jed Hoyer wants to move in this winter.
