The Chicago Cubs have made big changes to their roster as they enter into their series against the divisional opponent Cincinnati Reds on Friday. They'll play a doubleheader to make up for a cancelled game from April.
Manager David Ross announced two roster moves ahead of the series as they've called up two players from Triple-A. One of the players is exciting prospect Alexander Canario and the other is former closer Shane Greene.
According to Andy Martinez of Marquee, Ross is waiting to see how things go in the first game of the doubleheader before he announces a starter for Game 2. It was originally thought that Greene could be used as the opener for the game and put a heavy workload on the bullpen.
However, that's not the case as Martinez reports, "Greene would be used out of the ‘pen."
The 34-year-old right hander is 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA in five games for the Triple-A affiliate in Iowa. He signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in June after hitting free agency following the 2022 season.
Greene is a former starter who moved into the bullpen in 2016 and became a closer for the Detroit Tigers. He should provide a boost to Chicago's bullpen who is in need of help after putting a lot of innings on their young arms throughout the season.
Ross expects to use him in Game 2 on Friday . It's to be seen whether that is in a long relief type of role or more as a setup man depending on the results of the early afternoon game.
