The Chicago Cubs have shown interest in former White Sox closer Liam Hendriks, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com. The Australian right-hander is coming off a challenging 2023 campaign that saw him battle back from a cancer diagnosis and deal with arm issues.

Hendriks' resilience can't be overstated. After receiving a Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in January, Hendriks was back on an MLB mound in late May. But his return lasted just five games before elbow issues flared up, eventually requiring Tommy John surgery. Regardless, Hendriks' journey resulted in American League Comeback Player of the Year honors.

The South Siders declined their $15 million club option on Hendriks for 2024 due to budget constraints and the uncertainty that comes with an injured player.

Nevertheless, his past accolades — three All-Star appearances and two AL Reliever of the Year awards — make him at least worth checking in on for other MLB clubs. Hendriks acknowledged the conversations with the Cubs, though he added that there's been "nothing substantial."

Hendriks underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 2, making a return to big-league action in 2024 unlikely. However, the 34-year-old has never backed down from a challenge and wants to return by next season's trade deadline. It's a bold outlook, but baseball fans have grown to expect nothing less from Hendriks.

If the Cubs further add to their bullpen this offseason, they'd probably be better off with an arm that's ready to go by Opening Day. However, they're at least doing their due diligence by checking in on a proven arm and positive clubhouse presence.
