Jameson Taillon was scratched from his first start of Spring Training with back tightness on Saturday. Taillon, who the Chicago Cubs were hoping could bounce back after a disappointing first season with the team, is now in jeopardy of missing the beginning of the year.

As currently constructed, the Cubs aren't good enough to have injuries.

Sure, they have options to replace Taillon in the short term, but this team isn't talented enough to have players missing extended periods of time.

It could make or break the season.

A timeline for Taillon has yet to be released. The decision to scratch him could've also been made in hopes that this doesn't turn into anything long-term.

Either way, there's a move that the front office needs to make.

With the possibility of Taillon missing the beginning of the season, this is an even better time for Chicago to sign Jordan Montgomery.

While Montgomery is also likely to miss the beginning of the season due to not facing live hitters in a game situation, his ramp-up shouldn't be too long.

The left-hander was a big part in the Texas Rangers winning a World Series in 2023, posting a 2.79 ERA in 67 2/3 innings. If he pitches the way he did last season for the Cubs, he'd have an opportunity to be the ace.

Montgomery has experience, entering the eighth season of his career. He spent most of his time with the New York Yankees, so pitching in Chicago wouldn't be too big of an ask in terms of a fan base expecting the most out of him.

It won't be cheap, but it's a move the front office needs to now consider.
