Cubs' Ryan Tepera receives MVP vote thanks to misclick

Ryan Tepera isn't a name anyone expected to see among the list of players who received votes for the National League MVP award.

The Chicago Cubs reliever, who was 0-1 on the season with a 3.92 ERA, received one 10th-place vote for one point, leaving him tied for 18th in the NL balloting. Although he was far behind Freddie Freeman, he still received more votes than Jacob deGrom, Bryce Harper and Nolan Arenado, who didn't receive any.

There's a simple explanation for Tepera receiving one vote, which can be explained by longtime St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Rick Hummel, who voted for the Cubs pitcher.

"I meant to hit Trea Turner and thought I had,'' Hummel said, according to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "I should have double-checked it."

Hummel said he intended to click Turner's name from the drop-down list, but says he accidentally clicked Tepera instead. Turner ended up finishing in seventh place.

Tepera, 33, hasn't done much since breaking into the league in 2015 with the Toronto Blue Jays. His best season came in 2017, when he went 7-1 with a 3.59 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 77.2 innings for Toronto.
