Prior to Sunday's game, the Chicago Cubs will be calling up David Bote from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, Nick Madrigal has been sent down to make room on the roster.

It is encouraging to see the team is finally looking for fresh options for an ineffective bench. In 28 games, Bote has hit 7 home runs as a member of the Iowa Cubs. His versatility will come in handy for a Cubs' team in need of a roster shakeup.

Nick Madrigal has been extremely disappointing and a big reason for the team's recent struggles. If he can get back on track with Triple-A Iowa, the Cubs will certainly welcome him back. But for now, it is painfully clear that he is not worth keeping on the roster.

With a much needed win on Saturday, the Cubs are looking for consistency. If Bote can hit the ground running, he is an instant boost to the roster.

Throughout his career, the infielder has shown he can play multiple positions if needed. He should be a good compliment to the left-handed Michael Busch in that regard.

Bote has even made one appearance in the outfield for Triple-A Iowa. Whether that was by design or not, it will be interesting to see if the Cubs give him some time there.

Given their options, it's surprising that the Cubs have waited this long to bring him back to Chicago. Even with a great spring training, the team looked elsewhere to finalize their 26-man roster.

Regardless, this move was a good one by Jed Hoyer. It was time to realize that Madrigal didn't belong on this roster and a change was needed.
