Cubs select Mason McGwire, son of slugger Mark McGwire, in 2022 MLB Draft

Since the MLB Draft takes place in the middle of the season, it can often get overlooked, especially with the All-Star festivities in full force.

But one selection has garnered extra attention, as it was reported that Mason McGwire, son of infamous slugger Mark McGwire, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.

The 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher was selected with No. 233 pick.

The draft selection was also notable given Mark played for the rival St. Louis Cardinals during his home-run-hitting heyday and regularly tortured the Cubs' pitching staff. In fact, the older McGwire took Chicago pitchers yard 23 times during his career. The 12-time All-Star hit 583 home runs over his 16-season MLB career, which has since been overshadowed by his role in the league's steroid scandal.

Meanwhile, Mason, 18, is currently committed to the University of Oklahoma where his older brother Max is an infielder. It isn't known yet if Mason will de-commit in order to go pro.

The young product out of Capistrano High School in California expressed in an interview last year that he wants to have a long MLB career and make a name for himself.

ESPN notes that Mason McGwire is one of  several sons of notable MLB players who were drafted this year. The Orioles selected Matt Holliday's son Jackson with the first overall pick while Andruw Jones' son Druw was selected second by the Arizona Diamondbacks, just to name a few.
