The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of catcher Luis Torrens on Tuesday. Torrens joined the Cubs this spring on a minor league deal and will now make the 26-man roster out of camp.

It's an interesting decision to add Torrens as he will be the third catcher behind Tucker Barnhart and Yan Gomes. The former Seattle Mariners catcher was non-tendered by his former team after slashing .225/.283/.298 and having little defensive capability behind the plate.

He rebounded nicely this spring after joining Chicago and hit .273/.385/.636 with two home runs in Cactus League play.

It remains to be seen what role Torrens will serve other than a potential designated hitter at times or the right-handed half of a platoon.

Torrens will remain on the roster as long as he hits, but if he can carry his spring production into the 2023 MLB season he could become a useful commodity for the Cubs.
