The Chicago Cubs made a smart, though not headline-grabbing, move to bolster their catching depth by signing veteran catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal, according to Robert Murray of Fansided. The deal also includes an invitation to Spring Training.

Alfaro is no stranger to the pressures of the big leagues, having spent parts of eight seasons at MLB level. At 30 years old, he offers a balance of maturity and readiness that could be essential throughout a grueling 162-game MLB season. Alfaro’s contract reportedly includes an opt-out, which could see him leave if the Cubs don't add him to the big-league roster by the end of May, a standard clause for such agreements.
While the signing may not generate the excitement of a marquee acquisition, Alfaro's addition to the Cubs serves as an important part of roster construction for depth purposes.
