Ahead of their second game in the series against the Pirates, the Chicago Cubs traded LHP Eric Stout to Pittsburgh for a cash consideration. The Cubs just recently promoted Stout from Triple-A Iowa prior to the series with the San Diego Padres.

Several days after calling the Glen Ellyn native up from Iowa, the Cubs DFA’d the lefty who sported a 4.91 ERA. Chicago had seven days to place Eric Stout on waivers or trade him. This is shorter than the old rules within the Collective Bargaining Agreement, allowing teams 10 days to make a corresponding move.

Eric Stout Stats

Appearing in 16 games with Triple-A Iowa, Stout threw 29.2 innings and sported a 3.94 ERA. He gave up 18 hits, including four home runs, while striking out 48 batters. Stout has only appeared in five games in Major League Baseball.

With a career ERA of 12.00, the Cubs aren’t losing a ton of production. But he still provides value in terms of eating up innings when they need their starters to rest.

Chicago is trading Stout to a Pirates team that can potentially be competitive in the future with the right pieces falling into place. Stout figures to be a depth pitcher on Pittsburgh’s staff and the Chicago Cubs only received cash in return.
