The Arizona Diamondbacks have finally promoted top prospect SS/3B Jordan Lawlar to the MLB. In a corresponding move, the team designated SS Nick Ahmed for assignment.

Lawlar was selected by the D-backs with the sixth overall pick in the 2021 draft out of high school. He was recently ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 10 overall prospect.

After being promoted to Triple-A Reno last month, Lawlar has slashed a .358/.438/.612 clip in 16 games. Cumulatively, in Double-A and Triple-A, he has hit .278/.378/.496 this season.

Corbin Carroll was excited for his friend to get the call up.

Whether Lawlar takes over as the shortstop or at third base remains to be seen, but the D-backs third basemen combo of Jace Peterson, Emmanuel Rivera and Evan Longoria have been struggling as of late. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo has also cooled off after being selected for his first All-Star game.

Manager Torey Lovullo said today that Lawlar will be the starting shortstop against lefties, which had been Ahmed’s role.

Ahmed had a very bad stretch during the last 10 games, while Lawlar put up ridiculous numbers in the same span.

This is a big move by the D-backs, who are currently 72-68 and 0.5 games back of the last Wild Card spot.
