Young Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Manning does not need surgery on his foot, doctors say. He has been placed on the 15-day injured list and it's unclear just how long he'll be sidelined for.

Manning fractured the fifth metatarsal on his right foot after he took a comebacker off that foot courtesy of Alejandro Kirk on Wednesday night.

This is another tough injury to that once-heralded young Tigers pitching staff.

Manning, 25, made his debut in 2021 and then only threw 63.0 innings last year, so this is another setback for him. He's 7-11 in his career with a 4.78 ERA.

As for the rest of the young Tigers? Casey Mize only thew 10.0 innings last year and could miss the entire season this year as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery.

Tarik Skubal is on the 60-day injured list after undergoing surgery last August and Jackson Jobe could miss most of the minor league season with a lumbar spine issue.

As a result of all the injuries, the Tigers have turned to Eduardo Rodriguez, Matthew Boyd, Michael Lorenzen, Spencer Turnbull and Joey Wentz.

The Tigers entered Friday's action at 3-9 on the season, tied for the fewest wins in the American League. They are six games back of first place in the AL Central, which is currently led by the Minnesota Twins.

At the time of this posting, the Tigers trailed the Giants, 5-4 in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The two teams will play again on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. ET. The Tigers have not named a starting pitcher for that matchup yet.
