The Detroit Tigers got good news on young pitcher Matt Manning on Tuesday.

He's been out since mid-April with a broken foot but appears to have taken a significant step in his recovery.

Per the RotoWire fantasy baseball portal:

Manning (foot) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Advice: It would appear to be the first time Manning has faced hitters since he went down with a fractured right foot back in mid-April. Assuming the right-hander comes out of Tuesday's session with no issues, he'll be cleared to begin a rehab assignment and presumably will require multiple rehab starts before rejoining the Tigers' rotation.

It's conceivable that Manning could rejoin the rotation by the end of June or early in July. Manning is part of a group of young pitchers that the Tigers have counted on in their rebuild that has failed to stay healthy. Manning, Casey Mize, Spencer Turnbull and Tarik Skubal are all injured.

Manning, 25, made his debut in 2021 and then only threw 63.0 innings last year, so this is another setback for him. He's 7-11 in his career with a 4.78 ERA.

The Tigers are currently 26-32 on the season and four games back of the first-place Twins in the American League Central. They have lost four straight and seven of their last 10 games.

The Tigers will take on the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. ET. Tyler Alexander pitches for Detroit while Taijuan Walker goes for the reigning National League champs.
