The Detroit Tigers entering the 2024 season had a question of who was going to play third base, they currently have Zach McKinstry and Matt Vierling as the options. Today they added some competition which may not be as much as they have signed Gio Urshela to a one-year deal for $1.5 million.

Gio Urshela By The Numbers

Urshela made his big-league debut on June 9th for the Cleveland Guardians, he went 0-3 that day. He spent two seasons with the Guardians before being traded by the Guardians to the Toronto Blue Jays for a player to be named or cash. In 2018 he was purchased by the New York Yankees from the Blue Jays and that’s when he burst onto the scene playing in 291 games he slashed .292/.335/.480 with a .815 OPS; he had 63 doubles, two triples, 41 home runs, 153 RBI, 139 runs scored, three stolen bases, and 63 walks. His breakout season was in 2019 when he hit .314 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI. In 2022 he played for the Minnesota Twins in which he played in 144 games and he hit .285 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI. Last season he played for the Los Angeles Angels playing in 62 games and he slashed .299/.329/.374 with a.703 OPS; he had eight doubles, one triple, two home runs, 24 RBI, 22 runs scored, three stolen bases, and ten walks. Urshela in his career has played every infield position and could slide all over the diamond for the Tigers to give them some versatility.
