Diamondbacks call up OF ahead of matchup vs. brother

The Angels host the Diamondbacks at 9:38 p.m. ET on Friday in the first contest of a three-game weekend set.

Both Arizona and Los Angeles have had surprisingly decent first halves, with the D-backs leading the NL West at 48-34. The Halos are in third place in the AL West at 44-39 but are just 1.5 games back of the third wild card spot.

The younger Fletcher was selected by Arizona in the second round of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Arkansas and made his big-league debut on April 30, 2023. The 25-year-old has split time between the majors and Triple-A Reno this spring, suiting up in 35 minor league games and 22 contests in the majors.

He's gone 24-for-78 with the Diamondbacks with two home runs and 13 RBIs.

The 29-year-old Fletcher was taken by the Angels in the sixth round of the 2015 draft out of Loyola Marymount University and first made it to "the show" in June 2018. He's been an above-average fielder during his 513 big league games and has played five different positions, primarily second base (288 games), shortstop (142) and third base (131).

The elder Fletcher finished in the top 10 in the AL in defensive wins above replacement (WAR) in three straight seasons from 2019-21 -- including sixth in 2021 at 1.9. He also finished first in the junior circuit in fielding percentage as a second baseman (.990) in 2021.

His best offensive season was arguably the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign, when he led MLB in singles (50) and finished third in the AL in batting average (.319)
