The Arizona Diamondbacks have optioned right fielder Jake McCarthy to Triple-A Reno following a discouraging start to the season.

After landing fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2022, McCarthy has disappointed many with a .143 batting average through 22 games this year.

And over the past couple of weeks, the former Diamondbacks first-round pick in 2018 has endured a 1-28 slump at the plate.

In return, the D-backs have brought up infielder Emmanuel Rivera from Reno. Rivera was traded to Arizona before the deadline last season. He then went on to his .227 in the 39 games he played in a Diamondbacks’ uniform.

This will be Rivera’s third season in the major leagues; he has primarily played third base so far.

The Diamondbacks will look to secure a series win over the Royals on Tuesday night. Ryne Nelson will take the mound; first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM.
