Zach Davies, who was placed on the 15-day IL on July 19th due to lower back inflammation, has recently completed his third rehab start down in Triple-A Reno.

This past Sunday, the Phoenix native pitched six innings, conceding three earned runs, allowing seven hits, and registering two strikeouts.

However, not all of his rehab starts have gone as smoothly.

Similar to his challenges with the Diamondbacks, Davies has encountered a comparable experience while in Triple-A.

Between his starts on August 10th and August 15th, Davies pitched a total of 7.1 innings, yielding 10 earned runs, allowing 15 hits, and recording just 4 strikeouts.

This is of course a major concern, especially considering the current starting pitching situation that the Diamondbacks are grappling with.

Due to a handful of injuries, the D-backs only have Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and rookie Brandon Pfaadt. On days where no starter is available, Torey Lovullo has been forced to rely on his less than sturdy bullpen.

And while Zach Davies might be nearing readiness for a return to the majors, there’s a possibility that he could end up doing more harm than good.

This season with the Diamondbacks, Davies holds a record of 1-7, carries a 7.38 ERA, and is averaging over 10 hits per nine innings.

Since Arizona transitioned to a three-man rotation, they boast an impressive 8-2 record.
