Minnesota Twins television announcer Dick Bremer was brought to tears during Sunday's season finale against the Rockies, and the 67-year-old said it was the first time it's happened in his 40 years calling games.
What brought the 67-year-old to tears? It was former Twins stars Justin Morneau and Trevor Plouffe, serving as analysts in the Bally Sports North booth, paying tribute to Bremer for 40 seasons on the job.
"For those who don't know, this is Dick's 40th year calling games. Justin and I were on the golf course and we were talking about you and how appreciative we are to be able to be in here with you and to learn from you, and we wanted to get you something," Plouffe said as a cake was delivered and Morneau handed Bremer a bottle of scotch.
"Forty years in the game," said Morneau. "We wanted to make sure we recognize this accomplishment because you've meant so much to so many Twins fans and to us as players who grew up with your voice in their living room. It's been a pleasure to work with you up to this point and we are happy that we get to continue to do it."
Overcome with emotion, Bremer patted his heart and said "I made it to 40 years without crying on TV."
Bremer then shifted gears and joked that he was impressed Morneau and Plouffe correctly spelled "congratulations" on the cake.
"Such a great ambassador for the Twins," Morneau said.
Bremer's longtime partner in the booth, Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven, was watching when Morneau and Plouffe surprised Bremer.
"Watching the Twins game as Dick Bremer got a cake and gifts in the booth for his 40th year of broadcasting Twins games. Congratulations Dick!" said Blyleven, who worked as the color analyst alongside Bremer from 1996 to 2020.
