Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May has been out for quite some time as a result of undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Five games into his 2021 season, May had injured his elbow and was forced to sit out the remainder of the season.
He was 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings pitched prior to his injury.
But according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, May’s recovery from Tommy John surgery is going well.
Roberts says the plan is to stretch him out as a starter, but that they are still quite a ways away from that.
Dodgers insider Fabian Ardaya reported the news on May via Twitter.
May Making Progress
This is good news for the Dodgers.
May is one of their better young pitchers and has a bright future ahead of him.
When he went down last season, the Dodgers’ depth took a bit of a hit, but he appears to be making some good progress as he prepares to take the next step in his rehab journey.
As Roberts mentioned, however, there are still several hurdles to clear before a timetable is set, which somewhat leaves his status for 2022 in doubt.
May first came up late in the 2019 season, but appeared in just 14 games.
He appeared in 12 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
Technically speaking, he has yet to pitch a full season in the big leagues.
But the good thing for the Dodgers is that he is recovering well and that some progress has been made.
Still, it’s not enough for a timetable to be set, but eventually that should come, especially if he continues to recover well.
We’ll see what next steps are in his rehab process.
