Dave Roberts broke protocol with regard to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pursuit of free agent Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani and his representatives have made it a point to teams involved in talks with him that they were supposed to keep things quiet. In fact, one report even said that Ohtani’s camp would hold it against any organization that leaked information about a meeting with him.
Consequently, there has been little information regarding Ohtani’s process, but it seems like the Dodgers, Angels, Blue Jays, Braves, Cubs and Giants are in the mix for him.
However, on Tuesday, Roberts told reporters that the Dodgers had met with Ohtani. He even provided a few details, saying they met with Ohtani for a few hours at Dodger Stadium, and Roberts thought the meeting went well.
There is little doubt that Roberts knows Ohtani’s camp wanted matters to be kept private. So why would he share those details? Was he given special permission to do so? Or does he feel like whatever he shared was harmless?
Roberts talking about the situation is different from how everyone else has handled things, making it very surprising that he talked publicly about the pursuit.
