Dodgers fill hole in rotation, ink starter Noah Syndergaard to one-year deal

In need of a pitcher to solidify its starting rotation, the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former All-Star Noah Syndergaard on Thursday.

According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Syndergaard's deal with the Dodgers is for $13 million, with $1.5 million in performance bonuses.

Last season, Syndergaard went 10-10 with a 3.94 ERA in 24 starts for the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies.

Picked up from the Angels in exchange for former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak and minor-league outfielder Jadiel Sanches, Syndergaard turned out to be a solid acquisition at the trade deadline by the Phillies. Syndergaard finished 5-2 with a 4.12 ERA in nine starts in Philadelphia. During the Phillies' postseason run to the World Series, Syndergaard made two starts in four games, going 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA and a hold in 8.1 innings pitched.

The 30-year-old is coming off his first full-season back from Tommy John surgery. Ahead of the 2020 season, Syndergaard felt discomfort in his throwing arm, which revealed a torn UCL, requiring surgery. He missed all of 2020 and made only two starts for the New York Mets in 2021 before signing with the Angels in free agency during the offseason.

The signing of Syndergaard all but wraps up the Dodgers' rotation for 2023. Syndergaard joins a starting five, including Julio Urias, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, and Tony Gonsolin.

If Syndergaard's latest Twitter post is an indication, the seven-year pro is happy to be wearing Dodger blue.
