The Los Angeles Dodgers received home runs from Mookie Betts and Trayce Thompson en route to defeating the Miami Marlins, 8-1, to put themselves in position to win the wraparound series on Monday.

In what was a 9:05 a.m. PT start time for the MLB Sunday Leadoff game on Peacock, Betts provided the Dodgers with an early jolt by hitting his 36th career leadoff home run. That also moved Betts into a tie with Shin-Soo Choo for 11th place among the most leadoff home runs in MLB history. Betts finished 3-for-5 and a triple shy of the cycle.

Justin Turner extended his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI single in the first inning. Trayce Thompson then added to the Dodgers’ lead with a solo homer to start the third inning.

Austin Barnes later provided some insurance by greeting Marlins relief pitcher Tommy Nance with a two-run single, and Betts’ broke the game open with an RBI single that extended the Dodgers’ lead to 6-1.

Turner hit an RBI double in the ninth inning and another run scored when Gavin Lux grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. Betts, Turner and Barnes had a game-high two RBI each.

Julio Urías allowed just one run over his six innings of work. That come on a Brian Anderson homer that occurred while Trea Turner was mic’d up for the Peacock stream. Turner jokingly blamed the broadcast crew for Urías allowing what wound up being the Marlins’ only hit against them.

Betts nearing Dodgers franchise record

Betts has seven leadoff home runs this season, which is tied with Davey Lopes for third-most in Dodgers franchise history. Joc Pederson broke Lopes’ record with eight leadoff home runs during the 2018 season, and then surpassed that mark by hitting nine in 2019.
