Although the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen welcomed back Blake Treinen over the weekend, the group remains without the likes of Yency Almonte, Danny Duffy, Victor González, Brusdar Graterol, Tommy Kahnle and David Price. Within the starting rotation, Tony Gonsolin is on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain.
Duffy and González have yet to pitch for the Dodgers in 2022, but are considered potential options for the final month of the regular season.
Meanwhile, Price was just put on the 15-day IL with left wrist inflammation. He’s taking a break from throwing for a few days but anticipates making a return in time for the postseason. Dodgers manager revealed Price has pitched through shoulder, elbow and wrist trouble for much of the season.
Price doesn’t figure to return until the middle of the month, and that also applies to Almonte, Duffy, Gonsolin, González, Graterol and Kahnle.
Yency Almonte update
Almonte threw a bullpen session over the weekend and is scheduled for another. “Yency, [Sunday] in his bullpen, felt good. He’ll be back on the mound, I think [Tuesday], and use his entire pitch mix.”
Almonte has been on the IL since Aug. 7 due to right elbow tightness. It was not expected to be a long-term injury, and an MRI supported that belief, but his recovery process has advanced slower than anticipated.
Danny Duffy update
Once ruled out for the rest of the season, Duffy overcame elbow soreness to start a rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex League Dodgers and has since joined Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Duffy last pitched for OKC on Saturday and was projected by Roberts to return around “mid-September.”
The Dodgers acquired Duffy at the trade deadline last season but he never pitched for the team due to suffering a setback while trying to return from a left flexor tendon strain. Duffy underwent offseason surgery and was re-signed to a one-year contract.
Tony Gonsolin update
Despite a forearm strain being an ominous injury for a pitcher, the Dodgers and Gonsolin have not held much concern. He underwent an MRI that revealed the ligaments were in good standing and a return shortly after being eligible was expected.
But as that date approaches, Gonsolin still hasn’t advanced to throwing off the mound.
“He went out to 90 feet [Monday], so until we get him out to 150, I don’t see that conversation being really relevant,” answered Roberts when asked when Gonsolin would throw a bullpen session.
Victor González update
González is another who hasn’t pitched for the Dodgers this season and is on a rehab assignment with Oklahoma City. Like with Duffy, the left-handed relief pitcher was generally projected to be available come the middle of the month.
Brusdar Graterol update
Graterol made just four appearances after returning from right shoulder inflammation before being put back on the 15-day IL because of inflammation in his throwing elbow.
“Brusdar feels really good. I think he should be getting off a mound soon,” Roberts said. “His catch-play was good and pain-free.”
Graterol began a throwing program after an MRI only revealed inflammation in his elbow.
Tommy Kahnle update
Kahnle fared well in four appearances upon returning from Tommy John surgery but a bone bruise as a result of the operation forced him back to the IL. After rehabbing for three months, Kahnle joined Oklahoma City on Aug. 24 and has pitched in four games thus far.
“Tommy’s going to throw [Tuesday]. We’ve exchanged texts on a group thread, he feels good,” Roberts said.
