The Los Angeles Dodgers had some troubles with their pitching staff throughout May due to various injuries and struggles, but three of their Minor League arms were honored for their performances during the month.

Dodgers prospect Emmet Sheehan was honored as a May Pitcher of the Month for Double-A Tulsa, while Matt Andriese was named a Pitcher of the Month for Triple-A Oklahoma City and Jared Karros was named a Pitcher of the Month at the Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.

In addition to the pitchers, High-A Great Lakes Loons infielder Austin Gauthier was named Midwest League Player of the Month after batting .349/.491/.614 with five home runs, 22 runs scored and 23 RBI. He posted eight multi-hit games prior to a promotion to the Drillers on May 29.

Dodgers Minor Leaguers recognized

Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month: Matt Andriese

Andriese went 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in four starts for Oklahoma City, throwing 20.1 innings while giving up just 14 hits and holding opponents to a .194 batting average. Andriese did not allow an eared run in two of his starts while holding the opposition to just one earned in another one of his outings.

Andriese’s month also included recognition as Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for May 8-14.

The 33-year-old journeyman was signed by the Dodgers to a Minor League contract during the offseason, bringing the Redlands native back to Southern California. He was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of the University of California-Riverside.

After appearing in 99 games for the Tampa Bay Rays between 2015-2018, Andriese spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels, and split 2021 between the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners organizations. During the 2022 season, he pitched in the NPB league, posting a 2.86 ERA in 63 innings for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan.

Texas League Pitcher of the Month: Emmet Sheehan

Sheehan went 2-0 with a 0.36 ERA in five appearances (four starts) for the Drillers. He logged 23.2 innings and gave up just one run, which came in the final inning he threw in the month of May. Sheehan led the Texas League with 41 strikeouts and held opposing hitters to a .098 average with just eight hits, five of which were singles.

The 23-year-old, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Boston College by the Dodgers, has done nothing but impress during his time with the organization.

He stood out during the 2022 Arizona Fall League and set an AFL record by striking out eight batters in a row during a one-hit scoreless outing, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since 2005.

Sheehan owns a 1.64 ERA across 49.1 innings with 83 strikeouts and a 0.79 WHIP this season, and he should be in line for a promotion to Triple-A soon. It would not be surprising if he debuts with the Dodgers this season.

California League Pitcher of the Month: Jared Karros

Karros went 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA in five appearances (four starts) for the Quakes. Karros did not allow an earned run in three of his outings and did not give up more than three hits in any of his games.

Karros held opponents to a .164 average and his 0.78 WHIP was the lowest among any pitcher with at least 11.1 innings in May. Overall on the season, the right-hander has pitched to a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings with 40 strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA.

The 22-year-old, who is the son of former Dodgers first baseman Eric Karros, was selected in the 16th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). Because of his father, Karros grew up as a Dodgers fan and was thrilled to be drafted by the organization.

He should soon receive a promotion Great Lakes as he does not have much left to prove with the Quakes.
