One former member of the Boston Red Sox is looking to work his way back up to the big leagues as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Former Red Sox pitcher Ryan Sherriff reportedly signed a minor league deal with Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon after spending the beginning of the 2023 campaign in the Boston organization, according to Oklahoma City Dodgers broadcasting and communications director Alex Freedman.
"If there weren't enough Dodgers news yet, I have some more: Ryan Sherriff is the latest veteran reliever to join the organization on a minor league deal," Freedman said. "He's with OKC in Reno. Trayce Thompson has joined OKC on a rehab assignment. He'll start in CF and bat third (Tuesday)."
Sherriff signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox ahead of the 2023 campaign and was impressive in a short stint. The 33-year-old left-handed relief pitcher began the season with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and in 21 appearances compiled a 2.82 ERA. Sherriff was called up to the big league club to fill in as injuries piled up and made five appearances with the Red Sox, and allowed just two earned runs across 6 2/3 innings pitched. The lefty was designated for assignment early in July to make room for infielder Yu Chang on the roster and elected free agency rather than returning to the minor leagues.
The 33-year-old isn't the first Red Sox relief pitcher to sign with the Dodgers to a minor league deal as they look to work their way back up to the big leagues. Longtime Boston reliever Ryan Brasier followed a similar path earlier this season and now is thriving with the Dodgers. Sherriff was solid in the Boston organization this season and it wouldn't be too surprising to see him make his way back up to the big leagues at some point with the Dodgers.
