On the 30-year anniversary of one of baseball’s greatest home runs, Dennis Eckersley, the man who served it up, marked the occasion.
On October 15, 1988, Los Angeles Dodgers star Kirk Gibson hit the now iconic walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
It helped spur his Los Angeles Dodgers to victory over the heavily favored Oakland Athletics. While that might not be a great memory for Eckersley, he noted the anniversary on Monday while shouting out Gibson.
While home runs from guys like Gibson, Bobby Thomson, Bill Mazeroski, and Joe Carter (among many others) will be remembered forever, it can never be fun to be the guy on the other end of it.
We really have to commend Eckersley here. He’s been a part of baseball lore for the past 30 years and will continue to be for the next 30 (and well beyond). He can either hide from it or embrace it. Eck has obviously chosen to do the latter, which he should be praised for.
