In 2019 and 2020, Evan Marshall was one of the most dependable relievers for the Chicago White Sox. During the 2021 campaign, injury issues arose and Marshall landed on the 10-day injured list on June 29. A month later, the Sox transferred him to the 60-day injured list. Marshall began a rehab stint at Triple-A Charlotte in late August but could not get his fastball velocity above 91 MPH, so he never rejoined the MLB club.

This issue left only one option for Marshall: Tommy John surgery. The righty underwent the procedure in mid-November and will be out of action until 2023.

What This Means for the White Sox

During Marshall’s three seasons in Chicago, he posted a 6-5 record, 3.31 ERA, 3.88 FIP, and 8.7 K/9 rate across 100.2 innings. His 2021 stats (5.60 ERA, 4.63 FIP) were a bit skewed due to a few outlier games and instances of dipping velocity, so they don’t tell the whole story. Overall, he still was a reliable mid-relief pitcher out of the bullpen.

The White Sox released Marshall on November 6, making him a free agent. As a result, Rick Hahn and company will have to add to the bullpen this offseason. They seem to have one reinforcement on the way with the reported signing of Kendall Graveman. Even with that addition, the White Sox could use some more bullpen help.

One avenue Hahn could pursue is a trade. If the White Sox do intend to move Craig Kimbrel as reported, they could look to get a middle reliever back as part of the return package. Time will tell what the South Siders ultimately decide to do, but one thing is certain: Evan Marshall will not be part of the mix in 2022.
