The Milwaukee Brewers are making depth moves.

Milwaukee -- who currently sits atop the National League Central standings -- officially signed former Boston Red Sox pitcher Fernando Abad to a minor league deal Thursday, according to the MLB Transaction Log.

Abad has had a roller coaster of a 2023 campaign, to say the least. The 37-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies before the season and began the campaign with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes and impressed with a 1.69 ERA in 13 outings. The lefty got called up to the big league club and struggled out the gate and eventually was designated for assignment and released. Abad re-joined the Rockies on another minor league deal and eventually worked his way back up to the big league roster but also was designated for assignment again.

Overall, Abad has compiled a 3.86 ERA in 26 appearances with the Isotopes this season and a 4.26 ERA in six outings with the Rockies. The lefty has compiled a 3.78 ERA across 11 big league seasons and has spent time with the Houston Astros, Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins, Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, and the Rockies.

Abad likely won't play much of a role with the Brewers but could be a depth option out of the bullpen down the line. Milwaukee currently is 71-57 and has a four-game lead in the National League Central standings. It could never hurt to add veteran depth on cheap contracts so the move makes sense for the soaring Brewers.
