Finding a home for Oakland A's in 2025

The Oakland A's face a potentially embarrassing problem in 2025.

Their lease on the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum expires after the 2024 season. Meanwhile, their new stadium in Las Vegas is not expected to be ready until 2028. This leaves a three-year window where the A's do not have a home before relocating.

An extension on the lease of the Coliseum is a possibility, but the relationship between the A's and the city has been shattered.

Mick Akers of the Las Vegas Journal-Review reported in August that team president Dave Kaval mentioned sharing Oracle Park, home of the Giants, as an option.

The A's could take over the home of their Triple-A squad temporarily but that would cause a logistical nightmare. John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle mentioned another possibility on Monday - the A's could use Sutter Health Park in Sacramento.

That solution has its own pitfalls. Sutter Health Park is home to the Giants' Triple-A affiliate. Sacramento is also outside the boundary of the Bay Area, an important note for their broadcasting revenue. They lose that revenue from NBC Sports California once they leave the Bay Area, even if they remain in the state.

The A's find themselves in a situation without a great solution. It is also a situation entirely of their own making. The organization burned the bridge with their fans and the city. Neither are likely to embrace the A's as they wait for their new stadium.

What fans are left are not likely to travel to San Francisco to watch them play. Either Triple-A park will hold fewer fans and cost broadcasting revenue. Each potential solution has its own unique set of problems.

The A's need to find a home for 2025 through 2027. That may be harder than it would appear.
