Former All-Star pitcher Brett Cecil retires after 10-season career
After a 10-year MLB career, including eight spent with the Toronto Blue Jays, left-handed pitcher Brett Cecil has officially announced his retirement.
The 35-year-old was selected 38th overall by the Blue Jays in the 2007 MLB June Amateur draft and made his debut in May 2009 as a starter. Cecil would spend the first three seasons of his career as a starter, before transitioning to the bullpen midway through the 2012 campaign.
The southpaw went 15-7 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 2010 and made his lone All-Star team in 2013 when he compiled a 5-1 record with a 2.82 ERA and 1.10 WHIP as a reliever. Cecil posted three straight seasons with an ERA under 3.00 from 2013 through 2015 and five consecutive seasons with a mark under 4.00 from 2013 through 2017.
In a small eight-game sample size, Cecil posted strong postseason numbers with the Blue Jays, hurling six shutout innings while allowing just one hit, four walks and six strikeouts. Cecil signed a four-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in November 2016, but hasn't seen an MLB diamond since the 2018 season as he's battled multiple injuries.
