The San Diego Padres have made their decision on their open managerial position, hiring Mike Shildt to take over . With the hiring of Shildt, it means that former Angels skipper Phil Nevin didn't get the job.

Nevin had interviewed with the Padres and was considered as a finalist for the job. After being fired by the Angels once the season ended, Nevin went looking for work and there was thought he could land in San Diego.

The former Halos skipper was likely never the long-term option for the Halos anyway. Nevin inherited the team after former manager Joe Maddon was let go, and he did what he could with the cast of characters the Angels had.

Nevin will likely be a candidate for other managerial openings that come down the line, and some team will likely bring him on. He may look to stay involved with the game while not managing, maybe joining a team as a bench coach.

Players loved Nevin during his time with the Halos, with some even clamoring for him to return to the team next season. But his lack of success on the field was too much for the front office to justify bringing him back.

They wanted to go in a different direction, which led to the team hiring Ron Washington. The team is very happy with their hiring of Washington, and they are looking forward to the new season.
