Matt Andriese is a journeyman pitcher whose stops include a forgettable 2020 season with the Los Angeles Angels.

Andriese relieved 15 games for the Angels during the COVID-shortened season and started one, finishing 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA. He split the 2021 season between Boston and Seattle, relieving 34 games along the way.

Ever since, Andriese has been chasing the starting pitcher's job he appeared to have won in July 2020 with the Angels, but could never keep. Andriese spent the 2022 season in Japan. He spent all of 2023 with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate.

Now, Andriese will get another chance in major league spring training with the Miami Marlins.

It was first reported in December that Andriese had signed a minor league contract with the Marlins. With an invitation to major league spring training, he'll have an opportunity to showcase his talents for a team coming off a pleasantly surprising 2023 season that ended with an NL wild card berth.

Among the NRI hopefuls also vying for a major league rotation spot: Kyle Tyler, a 2018 Angels draft pick who appeared in five games out of the Halos' bullpen in 2021. He's also trying to make the leap from reliever to starter mid-career.

Andriese's last major league start came with the Angels in 2020. It didn't go well. Filling in for Shohei Ohtani, Andriese couldn't make it out of the second inning in a 9-6 loss to the Houston Astros.

Now 34, the right-hander from Redlands is hoping his latest chance to crack a major league rotation is not his last.
