Lance Berkman has stepped down as the head baseball coach for Second Baptist School in Houston.
Berkman, who played 12 seasons for the Houston Astros in a 16-year big-league career, was head coach at Second Baptist for four seasons. In a statement shared by Fox 26 reporter Mark Berman, Berkman said he took the job to build his resume to eventually become the coach at Rice, his alma mater.
Rice went a different direction with their coaching hire last summer, and Berkman has decided coaching high school ball is no longer something he wants to do.
Berkman took over a very successful program in 2016 and helped lead it to a TAPPS 4-A state championship in 2016. The program since fell off a bit the last two years.
Berkman, 43, led MLB in doubles twice and RBIs once during his playing career. He made six All-Star teams, hit 366 career homers and won a World Series title in 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals.
