Miami Marlins ace pitcher and 2022 National League Cy Young award winner Sandy Alcantara announced on social media Friday night that he underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss the entirety of the 2024 season.

He ended the season on the injured list and tried to come back but was shut down after not feeling right following a rehab start.

"With a heavy heart, I want to let everyone know I had Tommy John surgery today and will miss next season. I am most saddened for the great Marlins fans, who were so supportive of me and the team this year. The drive to the playoffs was thrilling for all of us.

I give this game my all, I give this city my all. And so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back better than ever. I will miss pitching, but I plan to be around the team as much as possible. I'm confident that guys like Jesús, Eury, Edward, Garrett and Trevor will hold down the fort while I am there giving my support. Nothing can take away from my love for Miami and the Marlins’ fans.

I also want to thank Dr. Meister and his team for the great care they gave me today."

It's a really tough loss for a Marlins team that just won 84 games and earned a spot in the National League playoffs. Without their anchor in the rotation, they will have to focus on young pitchers like Eury Perez, Edward Cabrera and Jesus Luzardo.

Alcantara wasn't the same this year, going 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA. He only struck out 151 batters in 184.2 innings.

In his Cy Young season of 2022, he went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA. He struck out 207 batters in 228.2 innings in that season.

The Marlins were beaten in the wild card round by the Philadelphia Phillies.
