Veteran outfielder Trayce Thompson, the brother of NBA star Klay Thompson, has signed a contract with the New York Mets heading into 2024.

Andy Martino of SNY had the information on social media:

Mets sign OF Trayce Thompson to a minor league deal with invite to spring training, per source.

The 32-year-old Thompson will be 33 before the start of the season. He's appeared in parts of seven major league seasons with the White Sox, Dodgers, A's, Cubs and Padres, but he has been most prominent for LA and the White Sox.

Lifetime, he's a .212 hitter with a .300 on-base percentage. He's got 45 career home runs, including hitting 13 twice in a season (2016 and 2022).

He played 36 games for both the Dodgers and White Sox in 2023.

At this point in the offseason, the Mets currently have Starling Marte, Cooper Hummel, Brandon Nimmo, Alex Ramirez and DJ Stewart as outfielders on the 40-man roster.

The White Sox currently feature Luis Robert Jr., Eloy Jimenez, Oscar Colas, Andrew Benintendi and Gavin Sheets.

The Dodgers have Mookie Betts, Jonny Deluca, Jason Heyward, James Outman and Andy Pages.

Given what the Mets currently have, it's not impossible to see Thompson making a run at a roster spot during spring training. If he's unable to secure one, he could be minor league depth for New York, or could pursue other opportunities elsewhere.

In addition to his big league career, Thompson also represented Great Britain at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
