Former Mets ace Matt Harvey embraces new career out of baseball

Former New York Mets ace Matt Harvey recently attended a Subway Series game involving the New York Yankees at Citi Field but has embraced a career away from baseball.

Steve Cuozzo of The New York Post shared Thursday that Harvey joined commercial real estate firm Newmark. The retired right-hander is serving as managing director of the company's multifamily debt origination and advisory unit.

"I’ve always been interested in the many different aspects of real estate," Harvey told Cuozzo. "By joining an incredibly successful firm such as Newmark, I will be able to learn and grow from some of the best in the industry."

Back in March, Harvey presumably was working toward his latest MLB comeback and represented Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic. However, the 34-year-old surprised some in the baseball community when he confirmed in May he was retiring.

"The Dark Knight" is now reportedly developing new client relationships with Newmark.

"Matt’s high-profile career has given him tremendous exposure to industry professionals and his position will allow him to expand the group’s footprint in the tristate region," Newmark said via a statement delivered to Cuozzo. "Matt has already hit the ground running, meeting with clients and colleagues and deploying his team-building skills to the multifamily and commercial financing sector."

Harvey, a one-time All-Star who earned National League Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2015, seemingly lost his physical prime overnight and was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome in 2016. That issue derailed a once-promising career well before Harvey was suspended last year for violating MLB's drug program.

He last pitched in an MLB game during the 2021 season.

Mets fan Anthony Orso, the president of the Capital Markets Strategies service that falls underneath the Newmark umbrella, ultimately helped Harvey launch his new career.

"He’s in the office early, working all day and often out with clients at night," Orso told Cuozzo about Harvey. Orso also believes the former MLB starter will "be very successful" with the firm.
