Former Philadelphia Phillies infielder/outfielder Josh Harrison has found a landing spot, as he’s reportedly signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday
Harrison's agency, MSM Sports, announced the deal. He is expected to join Triple-A Round Rock. The Rangers have not announced the contract and don't typically announce minor-league deals. His signing was not on the MiLB.com transactions tracker.
Harrison was the player the Phillies cut to make room for pitcher Michael Lorenzen when they acquired him at the trade deadline. Lorenzen has won his first two starts with the Phillies, including a no-hitter last week.
The Phillies signed Harrison, 36, in the off-season after he spent the 2022 season with the Chicago White Sox. Harrison played six different positions for the Phillies, but his bat never got on track He slashed .204/.263/.291/.554 in 40 games, with two home runs and 10 RBI.
The Rangers are in first place in the American League West and likely signed Harrison as insurance in case of more injuries.
The Rangers lost third baseman Josh Jung to a fractured wrist in late July, but he could return by the end of the regular season. The Rangers have also lost shortstop Corey Seager for about six weeks this season, and the All-Star is currently recovering from a thumb injury.
Harrison is a two-time All-Star with a career .270 batting average, including 73 home runs and 388 RBI in a 13-year career during which he also played for Pittsburgh, Detroit, Washington and Oakland.
