Former Chicago White Sox closer Shingo Takatsu has won the 2021 Japan Series as manager of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Takatsu played with the White Sox from 2004 to 2005. During his time on the South Side, Takatsu pitched 91.0 innings in 90 games. He had a 7-6 record, 3.46 ERA, and 27 saves.

Takatsu managed the Yakult Swallows to their first championship since 2001. He was proud of his club for grinding throughout the season and spoke fondly of the experience of winning.

“It was really a hard season, coming off back-to-back last-place finishes, so the joy right now is off the charts,” Takatsu said. “We wanted to represent the Central League with pride, but the Buffaloes were extremely difficult opponents, so this was no easy task.”

“Mr. Zero” will always be remembered fondly for his short stint in Chicago. He was the 2004 AL Rookie of the Year runner-up after a magical season upon breaking into the Major Leagues.
