Will the Boston Red Sox ever come to terms with Rafael Devers on a new deal? Kevin Sousa-USA TODAY Sports

Four-time All-Star Mike Lowell on Red Sox-Rafael Devers negotiations: 'I think it's a framework for him to leave Boston'

Mike Lowell knows a thing or two about playing the hot corner in Beantown. While he was drafted by and made his MLB debut with the rival-New York Yankees and then played his first seven MLB seasons with the Florida Marlins, Lowell manned third base for the Boston Red Sox for the final five years of his career from 2016 to 2010, earning an All-Star berth, a World Series title (with MVP honors) and finishing fifth in the AL MVP voting in 2007.

Current Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (along with shortstop Xander Bogaerts) has been the talk of the city lately, with both All-Stars' futures with Boston looking dicey at best. It was reported on Tuesday that the Red Sox had identified Atlanta Braves' first baseman Matt Olson's eight-year, $168 million deal as a "basis for discussions" with Devers.

On Thursday, Lowell gave his thoughts on the situation.

Lowell isn't the only former Boston star to chime in on the Devers' contract talks. In talking about the two infielders, soon-to-be Baseball Hall-of-Famer David Ortiz said last week that the Red Sox need to "lock them in."

In April, it was reported that the team offered the 25-year-old native of the Dominican Republic a new deal worth approximately $200 million, but Devers was seeking contract worth over $300 million.
