Francisco Lindor agrees with owner Steve Cohen about Mets struggles

Roughly two weeks after New York Mets owner Steve Cohen put the onus on the players to perform better amid a disappointing year, shortstop Francisco Lindor concurred.

A guest of "On Base with Mookie Betts" Saturday, Lindor said he "respected" Cohen's comments, reiterating that the players are to blame for the Mets' abysmal 2023.

"He's right, we have got to play better," Lindor said. "We gotta play better. I said it yesterday too. Front offices can put the best team together on paper, but if us the players don't execute and don't come out and do the job, it's not the best team."

Lindor did admit that the vibe around the Mets was different after Cohen called the team out. However, instead of being salty over being criticized, Lindor said, if anything, it rallied the team together, knowing that their owner truly understood the situation.

Not a ton has changed in Flushing for the Mets since Cohen's press conference going 6-6 entering play Saturday. However, over that 12-game stretch, the Mets put together their longest winning streak of the season, tallying six-straight victories to start July. Unfortunately, the Mets have lost three straight following a 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

The season is quickly becoming a lost cause for the Mets, who trail the first-place Atlanta Braves (61-29) by 19.5 games in the National League East and are a full eight games back of the San Francisco Giants for the third and final wildcard spot in the NL.
